It then hung at "Unmounting Disk" for about an hour before I gave up completely. So, either use your Mac for a few hours doing things other than making a Boot Camp partition, or tell your Mac to never sleep in the Energy Saver control panel and walk away for a while. I set it to the OSX Journaled filesystem as specified in the guide, and clicked erase. I had seen other people just use Erase and it seemed like that would be fine for me. Disk Utility loaded this time, but there was no Partition tab. Back to Ubuntu, I formatted the partition to FAT and tried once more. The volumes within the container, as block-copied from the image file, showed right up. In the Apple File System Space Sharing dialog, click Partition. If Disk Utility isn’t open, click the Launchpad icon in the Dock, type Disk Utility in the Search field, then click the Disk Utility icon. But when I changed the partition type to APFS - which I achieved by using 'gpt remove' followed by 'gpt add' - everything was exactly as expected. In the Disk Utility app on your Mac, select a volume in the sidebar, then click the Partition button in the toolbar. After getting back to the installer, I tried loading Disk Utility again, but it hung at "Getting Disk Information", again for 15 minutes or so before I gave up. It was absent from 'diskutil list' and present only as a greyed out 'disk2s4' in Disk Utility.

Then I created a full 60GB ext3 partition on there, hoping the OSX installer could deal with that. It should be called 'Macintosh HD.' Its your internal physical volume.

While in Disk Utility, select the hard drive you want to run First Aid on. Its a nice little feature included in all current Mac operating systems. I booted an Ubuntu Live disk and partitioned the drive to remove the Windows System Information partition, and installed GUID Partition table. The first step to fixing a hard drive disk is to run First Aid.

Initially, the drive had a windows 7 install on it, which I was going to format away.
BIOS settings for AHCI, suspend mode to S3, and DVD is first boot device, hard drive second. DVD is on first SATA port, SSD is on the 2nd.
